Our boat stayed at Pinhão and we took off for 2 field trips. Our first stop was the Mateus Palace. The manor was constructed in 1739 made in the Baroque style. The ceilings were made of chestnut wood and the home is still furnished with some of the original furnishings. The library was impressive. The outdoor gardens were French in design with some of the plants planted n the 1700s. The front mirror pond was added in the 1950s.

Our second field trip was to a local winery at Favaio, where they served us a wonderful late lunch . The 5th generation owner/host , Luis Barros, was a hoot.  This region grows muscat grapes. We enjoyed  muscatel  do douro wine and then the traditional dessert muscato after our meal. Oh.  And then there was the grappa at the very end.
